Projects of the statutory City of Brno in transport infrastructure

1. Investment projects of Brněnské komunikace a.s.

Polní Parking House project

The project is co-financed by the European Union through the Integrated Regional Operational Program.

The subject of the project is the construction of a new parking house in the P + R mode. The main goal of the project is the implementation of a system for prioritizing parking outside the city center in combination with the use of free capacity offered by the following public transport.

Preparation of the project began in 2019. In April 2019, a subsidy was requested for the construction of a parking house from the development program of the Brno metropolitan area ITI - Construction and modernization of transfer terminals and separate parking systems IV. The implementation itself began in June 2020 and ended in May 2021. Since June 2021, the parking house has been in operation.

The parking house offers a total of 110 parking spaces for cars. There are also cyclists for whom there are stands with a total capacity of 25 seats.

Both people with reduced mobility or people with a child in a pram, for whom there are reserved places, and owners of cars with CNG and LPG propulsion will conveniently place their car here. Passengers can continue to the city center by public transport, the nearest stop of which is located about 100 meters from the parking house.

2. International cooperation projects with the participation of Brněnské komunikace a.s.

Current projects:

  • C-ROADS Czech Republic

The aim of the C-ROADS Czech Republic project is to harmonise cooperation in the introduction of cooperative intelligent transport systems (hereinafter “C-ITS”) in the countries of Central Europe. This project is part of the C-ROADS international platform. C-ITS means systems based on communication (exchange of data) between vehicles and devices on the road infrastructure. Thanks to this information drivers can promptly respond to the warning system, safely manage an unexpected situation and prevent a potential accident. This could, for example, involve a warning during a road accident, a queue of traffic in front of the driver or a slow moving maintenance vehicle with a truck emitting a warning light. Thus cooperative systems are to significantly contribute to the smooth flow of road traffic and increased road safety.

In total 9 partners from the Czech Republic are cooperating on the project. The coordinator of the project is the Ministry of Transport of the Czech Republic. The partners of the project are the Road and Motorway Directorate of the Czech Republic (ŘSD ČR), Railway Infrastructure Administration (SŽDC), AŽD Praha s.r.o., Faculty of Transportation Sciences at the Czech Technical University in Prague, Brněnské komunikace a.s., O2 Czech Republic a.s., T-Mobile Czech Republic a.s. and INTENS Corporation s.r.o.

The period for which the project is being implemented is February 2016 – December 2020. Brněnské komunikace a.s. will focus in the project on building an urban system of C-ITS on selected main roads. For example, this will involve a stop signal warning to drivers at traffic lights or a warning against another vehicle riding on a red traffic light.

In view of the low penetration of C-ITS vehicles in the Czech Republic, Brněnské komunikace a.s. will also equip part of its own fleet vehicles with C-ITS onboard units (OBUs) as part of the project. Therefore the communication will be tested in the project of RSUs (Roadside Units) which will be connected to controlled traffic lights at crossroads, with units installed in vehicles using the ITS G5 standard. In cooperation with ŘSD ČR the implementation of the project in the territory of the city of Brno will be a follow-up to the C-ITS application used in the infrastructure managed by ŘSD, which is having a significant impact on the daily traffic situation in the city. This cooperation will, for example, involve implementing applications for drivers to warn of road works.

The project will deal with the technical design, implementation and pilot run of the cooperative systems as well as the evaluation of results during live operation.

The total estimated costs of Brněnské komunikace a.s. for the implementation of the C-ROADS Czech Republic project are 66.5 million CZK, with co-financing by the European Union amounting to 56.5 million CZK.

The C-ROADS Czech Republic project is co-financed from the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Transport). For more information about the project go to: http://c-roads.cz/

  • In-Time Project

IN TIME Intelligent and effective travel management in European cities) is a project of the European Commission the aim of which is the creation and long-term pilot testing of a new type of service in the provision of multi-modal traffic data and information to the public.

Six major European cities (Vienna, Oslo, Munich, Florence, Bucharest and Brno) and 22 companies are actively involved by contract in the project.

The city of Brno is represented by Brněnské komunikace a.s.

In the project the possibilities of effective regional and border traffic cooperation between Brno and Vienna and their regions are being gradually tested.

Significant elements for addressing this part of the project are, for example, the relatively small distance between both cities and their neighbouring areas, gradually implemented motorway connection, high traffic intensity on existing roads, common elements of cultural and historical traditions in the regions of South Moravia and Lower Austria and others.
